History apparently stored although I've selected to "Never Remember History"

I'm using Firefox 5.0 on a mac and I recently came back from vacation to find that upon opening the browser on my work computer I was automatically logged in to my personal websites. I had set the privacy preference to "Never Remember History" and have worked this way always. While I was gone some one changed it to the default "Remember History". When that happened, FF seems to have coughed up all my passwords and logged me in to my homepage and social networking sites automatically.

I tested this by changing the setting to "Never Remember History", quitting and restarting FF (I am no longer logged in) and then reversing the process, quitting and restarting FF and I am again logged in automatically. This seems to defeat the purpose of "Never Remember History".

Could it be that I first entered my passwords when the "Remember History" option was enabled by default and so FF has stored them somewhere, regardless of any changes to the privacy options afterwards?

You probably didn't clear the cookies before switching to Private Browsing mode.
The cookies that you had in normal mode will become available as soon as you leave PB mode (PB mode gives you a new set of cookies, but doesn't remove already stored cookies). So if you were logged in while you were in normal mode then those cookies will get logged on once again.
