The Mozilla icon on my desktop or laptop screen opens to a search page whose security icon on the left of the address toolbar indicates if the site is encrypted or not. In my case it isn't and I wish for Mozilla to open to a search page that is. How do I accomplish that?

The "site identity button" turns green when the site uses an EV-SSL certificate. An EV-SSL certificate has a higher standard of verification than a regular SSL certificate.

If the site you are opening from the desktop has EV-SSL (or SSL), visit its secure page and then update your home page to that secure page. Check out the methods described in this article: How to set the home page | How to | Firefox Help.

Any luck?

Just an added note that you should check for a secure connection on the page where you are actually entering sensitive information. Just having a secure home/search page does not protect you on other sites.
