Install thunderbird. Create a mail account.

If POP mail account: Tools > Import select 'Mail' click on Next

Pop mail accounts can only see the server Inbox. It downloads all previously not downloaded mail to the mail account Inbox. Pop mail accounts cannot see any other fodler on the server. This is not a Thunderbird quirk, this is how all pop mail accounts work no matter what the email client.

To get emails downloaded from other folders on the server.

  • Logon to webmail account.
  • Move emails into Inbox.
  • In Thunderbird click on GetMail.
  • when emails are successfully doownloaded move them into suitable folders.

If IMAP mail account,

you need to subscribe to see folders.

then synchronize folders to keep local copies if desired. more info on IMAP:

Contacts/Address Books:

In webmail, export the address book/contacts in a comma separated .csv file and save to your desktop. In Thunderbird open 'Address Book'

  • Tools > import
  • select 'Address books'
  • click on Next
  • select 'Text file (LDIF, .tab. .csv, .txt)
  • click on Next
  • locate the .csv file you download
  • click on Open
  • map fields to match Thunderbird fields
