In trying to install the latest download, my Mac asks if I want to replace firefox with an OLDER version--should I do this?

Firefox informed me that it had downloaded an update. When I tried to install it, my iMac asked me if I wanted to replace firefox with an OLDER version. It was not clear to me why it asked this. If this download is an update, why is it detected by my computer as an "older version."? And should I install it? I can elect to replace the "newer" version or keep both. Which is best? (Without unnecessarily using up extra space.)

Thanks.

Chosen solution

Hello phkirby, please always try to to download and install firefox from the official site, do the next steps:

1. Download a copy of the latest firefox from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html (full installer)

2. Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean install.

3. Install the version that you have downloaded.

Do not select to remove your personal data, your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks or other personal data.
