I am trying to search Firefox for simple terms. For example "1856". I know there are several emails with that term. Yet firefox will not return them. This is a reoccurring issues across many different terms. I have been forced to use methods outside of Firefox to find emails. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi nealrm, Firefox will only search saved webpages, bookmarks or will search with the default engine selected. I would recommend using the webmail search option if the email provider has it. This will narrow down and specify the search.
