Files are opened by the program that you have assigned to open it, not by your default web browser. The default web browser is just the program that opens web URLs by default. To change the program that opens pictures (or any other file type you want) by default:

  1. Go to the Start menu.
  2. Click Default Programs.
  3. There, click Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program. The list of extensions (file types) may take a while to populate and display, that's normal.
  4. Click the Current Default column to sort by the current default program. Scroll down until you see the file extensions associated with Internet Explorer.
  5. For each of the file extensions you want to associate with Firefox instead, click on it, then press the Change program... button and select Firefox as the new default program (you may need to click the [+] icon to display Other Programs).

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to select many files at once and switch them in one go, you will need to do it for each file type.

it didnt work because it didnt react as you had described.

Do you see "Open with" if you right-click such a file in Windows Explorer?

You may have to hold down the Shift key when right-clicking.

You can also try to check the registry for that file extension.
