I was looking through some old messages, and although the subject line was visible, and Thunderbird could identify the e-mails and filter them, I could not read the e-mails, and when I clicked on them, the icon showing that there was an attachment disappeared.

Chosen solution

sounds like your anti virus might have deleted you folder of mails.

Right click the folder, select properties and then repair to have Thunderbird rebuild it's index of what is actually in your mail store. Expect most of your mail to not be there.
