Thunderbird 45.1.1 I have 2 profiles, one currently used and an older profile from an email account no longer used which I want to delete / remove but can't see how to do this.

Selecting Tools\Account Settings I first notice that the account profile that I want to remove has this text “The following is a special account. There are no identities associated with it - Selecting the “Account Actions” for this account I see both the “Set as Default” and “Remove” options are greyed out. Selecting “Account Actions” for the account that I am using (want to keep) the “Set as Default” is also greyed out, however the “Remove” option is not. The two profiles are: C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\ig04ic9f.default\Mail\pop.1and1.co.uk (this is the one to retain) C:\Users\Paul\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\90feu9l1.default\Mail\Local Folders (this is the one to delete)

I have followed Mozilla direction on running "Profile Manager" provided @ https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager >> this does not provide a solution - running Profile Manager the displayed window contains a single profile entry called "default", my 2 profiles are not displayed. I have tried deleting this "default" profile but this deletes both profiles.

You are not talking about Profiles :) Profile folder names are usually called 'xxxxxxxx.default' where the x's are letters and numbers. When Thunderbird was first run, it auto created a default profile to hold mail accounts. You are talking about the default mail account called 'Local Folders'.

This is a special mail account. It can be used as a storage for any emails, but for anyone using an imap mail account, it is used to store emails that have been removed from the server. It can aslo be used by someone who has one or more POP mail accounts but would prefer to have all incoming mail from different email addresses (pop mail accounts) collated into one 'Global Inbox'.

'Local Folders' contains the 'Outbox' folder. 'Outbox' is used by all mail accounts to store emails which have been selected to 'Send Later'.

More on 'Local Folders' mail account:

There is an addon which can 'hide' Local Folders mail account. But I've not used it.
