link in email opens a new window instead of another tab in existing window. Changing "Options/General" to open new windows in a new tab instead did not fix the problem. please advise

Are you using an external application that is on your PC to do email?

Or are you using webmail in Firefox?

Email is Thunderbird. I did not knowingly change anything--began opening new browser windows on it's own.
