So firefox was running slow so it suggested I do an update, after doing this it wouldn't load any pages. I have read through the guide and it just says that you have to disable avast shield. Thing is it was working before hand, so I am confused why there is no way to work the two together. I have tried resetting avast, but obviously I wont use firefox if my anti-virus software doesnt work with it, I'll just switch to chrome - but I like firefox more so trying to avoid that but obviously being protected on the net is the whole point of an antivirus.

I hope the suggestion to update was not a fake update from the internet. Those were targeted at Windows users, but quite possibly now also target Mac s. What guide are you reading about Avast Shield have you got a link to it ?

Most AV software works with Firefox, but may need setting up correctly and keeping up to date. Often if there are problems it is because the software is not updated or especially on Windows it is actually some bundled software of speculative value that fails, while the main core AntiVirus software continues to work.

I also understand Macs are considered quite secure, see for instance Aples's:

& IIRC some even suggest AV software is not needed, other than to protect Windows Systems if you transfer files to Windows.

Hi,

thanks for your response.

I wasnt completely clear. I have always used anti-virus software with my mac, avast was recommended to me.

If you use your mac strictly by the book, i.e only using mac approved software from the mac store e.t.c, now that can be terribly limiting and expensive, Im a sucker for dos box and games you cant get on macs, and If I am honest I dont want to pay through the nose in other areas - without going too far into that.

You still get viruses on macs, I have recently had issues with malware with pop up windows in firefox, easily fixed with the correct software.

That said the new upgrade which has just come out seems to have a better level of security which is fine.

The odd thing is it was working before the update - updating firefox to make it run quicker - the update button recommended as it was slow - not a software update if you get my meaning. This makes me think there is a solution, but I am unable to find it.
