When exporting bookmarks, why do the saved logins and passwords not follow?
I cannot get my saved login information and passwords to export to my new desktop.
What am I doing wrong?

Sorry, Firefox doesn't have an export function for logins / passwords. But there is an extension that adds that feature.

You can copy files like these to the current Firefox profile folder to transfer/recover specific data.
- bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
- bookmark backups: JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
- SQLite files like cookies.sqlite (cookies) and formhistory.sqlite (saved form data)
- logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
- cert8.db and possibly cert_override.txt for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
- persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
- permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other Site Preferences
- sessionstore.js for open tabs and pinned tabs and tab groups
You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
- Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

I have followed your instructions and have my old profile on a USB drive. I cannot for the life of me understand how to get it from the USB drive into my current Firefox program. Hard for me to understand this when the browser is closed. Where do I find either save as or import?
Thanks so much.

You need to copy the files with data that you want t5o transfer to the current Firefox profile folder. Easiest to go to this folder is to use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" page. Otherwise you would have to browse with the File Explorer to this hidden location.
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
"AppData" (XP: Application Data; Mac: ~/Library; Linux: ~/.mozilla) is a hidden folder.
You can close Firefox once you are in the profile folder.
Did you find the logins.json and key3.db files on the old computer?
I have the entire old profile on a thumb drive.
I am desperately looking for a simple procedure for loading that profile into the new Firefox on my new computer. I have already created a new profile; I just need a clear instruction on how to get the thumb drive file into it.
Thanks.
You can replace the files in your new Firefox profile folder with the ones on the thumb drive.
Are you able to access the profile folder on your new computer?
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure you go to the correct location in %AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\. Location used for the main profile in "AppData\Roaming".
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files in "AppData\Local".
- C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
%AppData% -> C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\ %LocalAppData% -> C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\
