on my mac thunderbird has stopped receiving or sending email to/from my gmail accounts. Looks like tb cannot connect to server. mac can load gmail via safari/gmail just fine and can send and receive emails. I have tried starting tb with addons disabled, and have started the mac in safe mode, no help. always get failed to connect to server. I have also connected the mac to another router with the same result. I have windows 10 machine and Linux Ubuntu machines with tb and they all work just fine. I have compared tb settings to linux tb and they are the same, I tried to reinstall tb but get same result, perhaps because tb cannot connect to internet/servers. I can ping smtp.gmail.com and imsg.gmail.com just fine from mac. I don't know what else to try. Regards... Jeff

Is it possible that the profile file is corrupted? I tried removing the profile file, but tbird would not install, so there must be a pointer someplace that controlls reinstall, and demand the profile file be present. I replaced the the original file, and have same problem. Regards... Jeff

I finally gave up trying to fix Thunderbird, and did a complete uninstall, and a reinstall, and now it works. Here is how to uninstall tb on a mac, thank you to the poster Edigio in 2008!

Post Posted May 23rd, 2008, 5:08 am Here are the 3 items you need to trash in order to uninstall TBird:

(1) The application itself -- it's in your Applications folder.

(2) The folder Thunderbird -- it's in your user Library > Thunderbird.

(3) And finally the preferences file -- it's in your user Library > Preferences > org.mozilla.thunderbird.plist

Caution: If you think you'll need some of those items as a back-up, don't trash (2) and (3). Put them in a flash drive and save them in case you need to re-install an address book, filters, or other settings.

If you really want to start totally fresh, go ahead and download a new copy of Thunderbird. Follow the installation procedure and replace the old copy in Applications.

When you re-start TB, it'll create a new folder, plist file, and profile. What that means is that you'll have to set up your accounts all over. Filters, address books and other settings will all be in the old folder you moved above. See if the new profile works correctly. If it does, then you know the old folder/profile had some damages. You can then salvage things from the old folder later on. It's a radical move if you want to give it a try. Egídio Mac OS X [10.6.4]
