As for Thunderbird, turn your computer off. Thunderbird is software running on your computer and it does not run with the computer off.

Any mail sent to your address will still arrive in your Inbox on your providers server. Most providers have a webmail page where you can check your mail from anywhere you have Internet and a computer with a browser. Ask your provider what your options with them are.
