Why does Thunderbird want permission to read my Gmail?

Thunderbird has a pop-up asking for my password (which is already entered in Thunderbird) and then permission to read, delete, etc. my Gmail account. What is this all about? I've been using it for years, and it never happened before. I'm very suspicious...is this legitimate, and why do you want that access?

Chosen solution

If you want Thunderbird to act as your user mail agent for a Google account then it needs your permission to do so.

Every so often Google fiddle with things and change the way it works. Or they just ask you periodically to renew or update your login info. Under such circumstances it may be necessary to renew the granting of permission.
