I've selected the option to Open links in tabs instead of new windows. That option worked until today. Restarting the browser doesn't help. Thanks.

Chosen solution

Note that the option to Open links in tabs instead of new windows is about links that specify a target window. Such links can be redirected to a new tab. Normal links would open in the same tab and you would have to hold the Ctrl key and left-click or middle-click the link to open the link in a new tab.

Nothing wrong here for me on 65.0.1 when opening new tabs. Not all sites will do this and I've seen some that will open in the same Browser window.

Same problem, but only when trying to open links contained in an email message. I use Thunderbird for personal email and Outlook for business email. Same issue when trying to open a link from either email application

You can check the target field in the Firefox desktop shortcut and make sure you do not start Firefox with the -no-remote switch or have set the environment variable MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1 (Control Panel > System > Advanced > Environment variables). If you have a MOZ_NO_REMOTE environment variable then remove this variable and do not change its value to 0 because that doesn't work (Firefox checks for its existence and not the value). The -no-remote switch hides the Firefox instance and makes it impossible to open external links in Firefox. You would have to drag the link to a Firefox window instead.

Thanks for the quick reply. However: 1. I checked, there is no "MOZ_NO_REMOTE" environmental variable. 2. My shortcut does not use any switches. 3. I started Firefox directly from the exe file (no shortcut), problem still exists.

PS - Problem appeared only after updating to Firefox 66.0.2 (64-bit). Thanks.
