How to prevent Thunderbird's "Failed to connect to server" popups when connection is lost without manually setting offline
I see many distracting pop up messages from Thunderbird indicating "Failed to connect to server" when I momentarily lose wifi or when the server is overloaded or just not working for some reason. I don't really care about that. I just want Thunderbird to check messages once a while (10 minutes) to have them ready when I want to check them between other tasks.
I have disabled notifications for new messages. I have even disabled notifications from Thunderbird at the operating system level (Linux/Gnome). Isn't it possible to tell Thunderbird to please keep quiet!
Thank you.

If the account is IMAP, TB will sync with the mail server every time you select an IMAP folder. Go offline from File/Offline/Work Offline, or click the icon at the left end of the Status Bar, to stop connection error messages.
