After the update today to FF 91.0, I can't make any changes to setting. Restore previous session at startup is no longer checked.

It appears that the only way to make settings selections is to return browser.proton.enabled to true. Of course now I am back to the awful new design that makes it hard to see the tab bar. Whoever made these changes, needs to understand to important things: 1. Modern sleek looking design DOES NOT EQUAL functional design 2. Just because you can doesn't mean you should

You can address the color/contrast issue using an add-on theme, for example:

Themes cannot add separators between the tabs. To do that, you would need to use the community-supported (unofficial) workaround of a userChrome.css file.

In case that is all new to you...

You can set Firefox to look for a style sheet file at startup that overrides the built-in styles of the toolbar area, menus, and various other things. I have a site about what it can do and how to set it up, with a specific section on restyling the tabs:
