hi, I just changes hosting, but saw after setting things up, (click settings - account settings - changed server name) that the account looked brand new, empty, no subfolders with sorted messages.

is this because I'd lazily set up imap on my old hosting instead of pop3? I know thunderbird has local copies of everything though, right? because I could see emails still while I was offline.

can I get my old emails back?

If you set up email on a new server, there will be no messages there. If I understand properly, the messages are on the old server.
