If you set the new tab page to the Firefox Home page then any new tab you open via the plus button will show the about:newtab page with the tiles. You can't auto-close this page. You can consider to set the new tab page to a blank page and use a bookmark with its URL field set to about:newtab and use this bookmark to get the Firefox Home page.
