Why are the menu and navagation bars "see through" as I can see my desk top in the back ground, very difficult to see the words to click on.

The top of the Firefox window is a "see through." In other words I can see my desk top through the menu and navigation bars making it very difficult to see the words in the menu bar, e.g. File, Edit,View, History, Bookmarks, etc. The rest of the window below these bars is solid no see through and easy to read. Why can't the whole window be be solid?
