why can't I install Firefox 5 on my Power PC G4 Powerbook, running Mac OS 10.5.8
I have a 1 GHz Power Book 17" G4 running OS 10.5.8, 256 KB L2 cache; 1 MB L3 cache; 1 GB DDR SDRAM with 13.78 GB available on the hard drive, and I am unable to install Firefox 5. I was able to download the application but when I tried to install it, the message came up that "you can't open the application "Firefox" because it is not supported on this architecture". However, when I checked system requirements prior to downloading the application all the requirements were met -
Operating Systems
* Mac OS X 10.4 or later
Minimum Hardware
* Macintosh computer with an Intel x86 or PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor * 128 MB RAM (Recommended: 256 MB RAM or greater) * 200 MB hard drive space
Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Pat Tamaras

Those system requirements you quoted are for Firefox 3.6.* and earlier. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6/system-requirements/
You can get the third-party tenfourfox builds at http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/
Your best bet is the Firefox 5.0 builds. The 4.0.2/4.0.3 versions are not based on builds from Mozilla as last was 4.0.1 and the 6.0b1 test build is old as 6.0b5 is current.

- Firefox 4 versions and later do not run on a PowerPC Mac.
- Firefox 4 and later require at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

For an unofficial Firefox 4 compatible version (TenFourFox) that runs on PowerPC Macs with OS X 10.4.11 or OS X 10.5.8 you can look at:
Firefox 3.6.x (Mac OS X 10.4 and later) can be found here:
Thank you cor-el. FYI, floodgap site is down and is not redirected. They hope to have the problem solved in the next 5-7 days. I will check back with floodgap in a week. Again, thank you, your answer was very helpful.
