Chosen solution

It appears you already have the latest Release version, Firefox 6. You can look to the right of your question or you can look at Help > About Firefox.

To answer your question, updating usually preserves your personal data (Bookmarks, Saved Passwords, etc.). However, it is always a good idea to keep a backup of your personal data in case of hard drive failure or accidental formatting, preferable on another hard drive, a pin/USB/thumb/jump drive, or a CD/DVD, so that you do not lose them. I use an Add-on named FEBE to do that for me on a regular basis.
