Why does firefox give me a "Not Responding" error every time I switch tabs or try to load a new site?

Ever since I updated to Firefox 6, I have been having a problem with switching tabs and opening new sites in a new tab. Whenever I try to do this, Firefox hangs and does nothing for quite a few seconds. If I try to click anywhere within Firefox during this "hang" time, I get a "Firefox is Not Responding" error across the top of the firefox window. What causes this? How do I fix it? Do I need to do a fresh install?
