When are you going to fix the CPU usage issue in plug-in container.exe? I know this is a common issue as have seen it questioned in threads.

The latest version of Firefox seems to have issues with high CPU usage in the plug-in container when running Flash videos. This is happening a lot as I have been reading threads along these lines. I have tried the same things that have been suggested in the threads. My sense is that you Mozilla folks know there is a problem and have not been forthcoming about it or what fixes you are working on. I suspect you have loaded the new version of Firefox with things that sap resources as has Adobe. What are you doing to fix the problem as you must know the problem cannot be fixed using your typical solutions.

If you have your own specific problem you would be best supplying full troubleshooting information and details of your own problem in your own thread.

It is probably reasonable to expect a

 $7000 computer ....

would be suitable for

the simplest games like Scrabble on Pogo which I play with my grandmother

There was probably no need for spending

6 hours last night trying every suggestion from the 3 links provided by Jscher above ... as well as every suggestion in all the sublinks within those.

Any one method should work. However with a complete lack of information about your your system other than its cost how do we know if that is even an appropriate suggestion of something for you need to try ?

You may have answered questions somewhere, about your system and problems; but apparently not on this forum under your current user name where I only see the posts listed here. That is this current thread only.

(1) RE your comment "If you have your own specific problem you would be best supplying full troubleshooting information and details of your own problem in your own thread."

Is that so? If I had the same problem as numerous other users for over a year which has been defined over and over, then why SHOULD I start my own my own thread? You are pretty pushy.

(2) RE your comment "It is probably reasonable to expect a $7000 computer .... would be suitable for the simplest games like Scrabble on Pogo which I play with my grandmother".

I DO NOT APPRECIATE YOUR SNIDE COMMENT. I owe you no further explanation than reciting that the problem is indeed happening. And to prove it, I've read numerous other users on these threads on this subject saying that POGO (which is something I only use with my grandmother and is very simple) is also eating up CPU usage. Why don't you search the forums and see instead of "presuming" I must be wrong?

(3) RE your comment "There was probably no need for spending

6 hours last night trying every suggestion from the 3 links provided by Jscher above ... as well as every suggestion in all the sublinks within those."

I DO NOT APPRECIATE YOUR SECOND SNIDE REMARK. I tried all of the suggestions made by Jscher and all of the suggestions within every sublink which took me that long as some were detailed. Who are YOU to tell me I shouldn't have tried them? : )

(4) RE your comment "Any one method should work."

What a ridiculous and uninformed comment. If you had read as many of these forums regarding this problem as I have over the past year, then you would be AWARE that all of the suggested fixes are NOT WORKING FOR PEOPLE. I've hundreds of comments about this on FF or Adobe or other forums ... yet "John" thinks that something should work? Your comment was INSULTING and DEGRADING to someone who has tried for over a year to fix this and should probably be reported.

(5) RE your comment "However with a complete lack of information about your your system other than its cost how do we know if that is even an appropriate suggestion of something for you need to try ?"

I DO NOT APPRECIATE YOUR THIRD SNIDE AND INSULTING COMMENT. Who said I knew nothing about my computer other than the cost? Do you think I would have been able to perform all of the tasks, including changing a configuration file, if I knew "nothing"? I said that I'm not reporting all the information you requested because I've been down this road before, yes you are right under my partner's ID just because it happened to be logged in at the time as well as the fact that we donate under that name so I thought I might get some action.

Please don't reply to me again. I was polite to you in my first replies and then you did nothing but insult me, my knowledge and my history with this problem. I'm sure they appreciate "volunteers" who basically tell people posting they don't know what their systems are, they haven't tried everything when we have and that "oh there really is a solution you just have missed it". No further contact would be appreciated ... thank you !

Oh I never noticed you're actually a "moderator". That make your SNIDE and uncalled for demeaning comment even more unacceptable. Seems to me like I was right ... FF knows they are leading people down the garden path on this and when that's brought up, well it isn't responded to very kindly.

But yet you can help me ... please outline how/who I report this exchange to?

Thanks!

To progressives72, I understand you are having problems and need help but you can't be attacking the people who are trying to help Firefox users. Also, you are asking for help for a Firefox issue in a thread started by jameshocutt (the thread owner) on Feb 5, 2014. See Mozilla Support rules and guidelines:

* Do not harass, insult, taunt, provoke, demean, or personally attack other forum members. Be friendly even if others are not.
* For support requests, do not re-use existing threads started by others, even if they are seemingly on the same subject.

If you need help with a similar issue you should start a new thread, which will include system details and troubleshooting information specific to your operating system and Firefox version. You can use this link to start the process: /questions/new

For other support resources see Get community support.

To jameshocutt:

You are the thread owner. Have you resolved the problem? If so, could you let us know what fixed it? This coutls help others with similar problems. If you still need help, let us know.

RE your comment "To progressives72, I understand you are having problems and need help but you can't be attacking the people who are trying to help Firefox users."

How amusing. Did you actually read my previous posts BEFORE his snide and uncalled for response? Perhaps you didn't take his response as such but I DID. Not everyone has time to start their own threads on subjects so in the past I've researched the problem and tried the suggestions given to others. Also, I have reported the problem under another account name along with detailed computer specs ... nothing has ever resulted in a resolution and therefore, I simply gave a general description that I have a high end gaming computer and was opting out of the thread as I've already tried everything and didn't provide all of computer information.

When I say you obviously didn't read my previous posts, it's because these are among the "respectful" and "appreciative" comments I made:

(1) "Thank you for taking the time to request information about my system but as I've said, I've answered them before, I've tried every suggested solution and nothing has worked."

(2) "Thanks again John and at this point I'm going to opt out of the thread. I'll continue using FF for everything else other than games and videos and will be back when they resolve this."

(3) "So I'm going to leave it for now after endlessly trying to fix it. I love FF though and we donate because we believe in it so strongly."

(4) "Thanks very much for that info and your efforts to help people with this ... I've seen you commenting since 2013 on it".

Would you call those comments disrespectful or harassing?? What an insult. No actually I'm exhausted after working all day and then spending hours for the past two nights trying to fix this and I DID NOT APPRECIATE him telling there was a solution when I've tried every suggestion for over a year and then telling me nah that really shouldn't be happening on a computer like that.

If my response to him OR you is inappropriate, then by all means REMOVE MY RIGHTS TO POST IN THESE FORUMS. In the meantime, I reported his comment via the abuse tag next to it. I suppose it will amount to nothing which is fine with me ... but don't try to tell me I was disprectful without looking at the full exchange. Pfttt ....

more options

No need ... I've already reported it as abuse. But it seems that even as a "moderator" you very "selectively" chided me without reading all my comments which expressed gratitude and were nothing but polite until his last response.

You can rest assured that I won't be starting any new threads or participating in these forums again after this experience ....

Sorry no insult intended. Perhaps I should have chosen my words better.

I certainly did not intend to say you did not understand your own computer. I was trying to point out that we as readers of the forum do not have information about your computer.

If we take the specific fix you tried disabling Adobe's protected mode. That particular fix is not even appropriate on some systems, in which case trying to apply the fix does not help.

When reading threads and comments it is worth remembering Firefox is highly customisable and works on differing platforms and operating systems. Firefox has something approaching 1/2 billion users. With those numbers if you can think of a problem someone probably has that problem. The majority probably have plugins using the plugin container. If only 1/10 of 1% of those have problems that is many millions of problems and any particular symptom may have many possible causes.

Clearly Firefox is not working correctly for you I am agreeing with that observation and repeating your comments. I am just trying to say the best way to find a solution to your problem is to give full relevant details of the problem and the system.

RE YOUR COMMENT "Sorry no insult intended. Perhaps I should have chosen my words better."

Thank you and I apologize too and want to just end this here as I regret it already got out of hand.

I was frustrated as a result of my determination to fix it which meant I've spent both of the past two nights working at it with no results .. still no excuse but wow is it frustrating. That was after reading hundreds of comments on Sunday and thinking "I'll try again". This is a pattern I've gone through since one of the Flash updates and the residual problems, it's been a long time. The issue is present on both an average desktop as well as a more expensive computer and so when I saw the initial comment from the thread's owner voicing frustration that he/she had also tried the various suggestions with no results, I decided to comment that I've had nothing work either. I did give computer specs during an exchange in the past that went on for days and days with no results ... and so after I tried all of those suggestions from the three links and sublinks last night (all well intended and things I had tried before), I didn't want to continue as I have a busy week ahead which is why I said I was opting out.

I understand your point about the many variables that naturally exist with hundreds of millions of FF users and the myriad of hardware we may be using. But I've done everything I've ever seen suggested on FF, Adobe and other forums including the standard fixes on both computers (one a year old, one about 2.5 years old) as well as other less common ideas like checking the drivers, graphics cards and security programs. And because I've been through all of that, it suddenly hit me last night that this is something beyond my control. That's why I said to Jscher at almost 2 am "I guess I've realized tonight that I'm unable to fix this problem ... if it is fixable". So when I saw your comment asking for specifics, I knew I wouldn't have time or the desire to continue on with this.

I also didn't know that each person was supposed to start a new thread with details because computer specs aren't requested that often. I say that as a reader of thousands of comments and it wasn't requested of me in the past until some time into an effort to get it fixed. But I'll keep that in mind for future issues. As to this one, I'm giving up on it.

RE your comment "Clearly Firefox is not working correctly for you I am agreeing with that".

Yes regarding games and videos but in every other sense, it runs beautifully. Another thing too that I think is relevant: people aren't just discussing it here but also in other forums where many have completely left FF over it which is very unfortunate and something I assume the company would be concerned about. As for me, I don't like to change browers for different functions and never had to in the past. I'm sure it will get sorted out in the future and then I can get back to using one browser.

Again, thanks for your efforts and attempt to help -- you had no way of knowing my long history on this.

Hello again progressives72,
Thanks for replying.

No point in continuing now if you do not have the time and have already expended too much effort on the issue. You remark that the Company should be concerned, but you no doubt realise part of the problem is the third party software and the variety of hardware involved.

I am sure Mozilla is aware that FlashPlayer is problematic. That will be part of the reason for a push to develop alternatives to using Flash. shumway having already been mentioned upthread by Jeff

By the way If you have commented many times in this forum (rather than in say the unrelated Mozillazine) about your problems, do you know the exact display names that you used, that at least helps us see your comments and so we may not be quite as repetitive in offering the same solution or asking the questions you have answered. Best of all is to start your own question, because there are steps that may be taken to troubleshoot problems, eliminate some possibilities, and identify the cause.

Some questions are like the proverbial needle in the haystack. There may be a serious Firefox problem buried unnoticed somewhere, but with all the other problems producing similar symptoms it goes unnoticed. Serious problems may be missed for a variety of reasons.

Firefox 4 had a serious memory related regression. Since then there has been a feedback comments button built into Firefox and there is the option for the telemetry reporting. Both steps Mozilla took to try to catch problems, by looking to the actual users of the Firefox Release in the real world, not just some lab testing.

Outside Firefox just look at massive 2 year old problem now making headlines

.... Lest readers think "catastrophic" is too exaggerated a description for the critical defect affecting an estimated two-thirds of the Internet's Web servers, consider this: at the moment this article was being prepared, the so-called Heartbleed bug was exposing end-user passwords, the contents of confidential e-mails, and other sensitive data belonging to Yahoo Mail and almost certainly countless other services. ....

Thanks for your attempts to help John. I couldn't reply on the thread because it has been closed but I'll take your advice in the future (opening my own thread with detailed information in the initial comment including specs and what I've already tried). But as you may have noticed Jscher gave me several links to try without knowing any of my system info. Much of what he suggested had been tried before but there were a few new ideas within the sublinks like doing a clean uninstall of Adobe ... that didn't work either.

About the rest of your comment, I know very little about the Mozilla forums because on the odd ocassion when I've had a question, I google it and have always been able to fix the issue by reading previous posts/responses. Therefore, I'm not even sure if I was on the site that you mentioned or how they differ -- I'm not a regular regarding forums and usually only come for specific reasons although I have read thousands of comments on this issue. I would have to go back last summer and find out exactly where the exchange took place where someone was trying to help us over a period of days. But as I said, I don't really have time to continue on this because any info that I could give you was given on that thread as well as discussed with a programmer friend who spent 2 hours to try to fix it. As I was saying to Jscher, I now understand that this is something that is an issue with FF and Adobe and I'm just going to have to wait it out until they come up with an internal Flash player.

It's not that big of deal to switch browsers to play games but we've always been very loyal to FF because we like what it stands for. I'm familiar with it and comfortable and so that's why I wanted to get it fixed. I suppose my initial reason for commenting was simply that I've seen many other people like me go through a lot of suggestions and getting frustrated but as you said, perhaps there are fixes for some -- I've just never seen anyone report it where I've been reading. As far as recognizing this may not be FF's fault ... absolutely. I've seen numerous knowledgeable people say it began with Adobe Flash Player release in 2012.

Thanks again and perhaps if I have time in the next few weeks, I will start a specific thread and see what happens but until then, I'm swamped. Good luck sir.
