Firefox 28.0 on Windows 7 does not use my default audio player for mp3 files. I tried "safe mode" and it works the same way.

If I run Internet explorer it works fine.

I am positive I have the default for mp3 set to Windows media player.

Firefox does use the default player for wav files.

Make sure everything is set to the program you want to use.

Note that current Firefox can and probably will use the built-in HTML5 media player to play mp3 files in case you use a direct link or an audio tag and not an embed or object tag with a type attribute that would use a plugin.
In case of the latter either the QuickTime plugin might be used (if the type is missing) or a plugin that supports the content type that is specified.
