I had a few collected addresses in the Thunderbird mail address book prior to importing my Windows mail address book . These can be entered properly, but none of the addresses imported from windows mail can be entered into any of the Thunderbird mail address lines.

The usual reason for this is that addresses imported from somewhere else have been entered into inappropriate fields in Thunderbird's Address Book; typically email addresses are filled into the nickname field.
