How do I get automatic fillin of username and password?
This is similar but different than my earlier question. On one computer when I open Firefox it automatically logs me into my home page (a Yahoo mail account.) When I open a new tab to my gmail login it comes up with my user name already filled in. All I have to do is click on NEXT and it goes to the sign in page with my password filled in. I can't get firefox on my my other computer to do this. My home page comes up with my user name filled in, but I have to manually go through the login process. When I open gmail in a new tab, I can't do anything except: 1. hit ENTER and get an error message, then click in the username box, or 2. re-click on the gmail icon to re-open the tab. Once I have done either of these the page comes up with two login names -the correct one and some weird one. (I haven't been able to get rid of the weird name, either.) I'd like to be able to set things so Firefox will do the same on this computer as it does on the other one.
Anyone have any suggestions?

A detail like a website remembering you (log you in automatically) is stored in a cookie.
You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you:
- Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially in case of secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
- Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: Exceptions
You can remove the cookies from a website to make the website forget about you.

Open the Password Manager. Search for that site. Is there a second entry for that site?
Type about:preferences#security<enter> in the address bar.
Under Passwords, select Remember. To check the passwords you have listed, press Saved Passwords.
That solved half my problem. I found the weird login for gmail and deleted it. Now when I open gmail in a new tab, my user name is automatically filled in. But I still haven't found a way to get FF to automatically log me into my home page.

That could be a Google services setting. You know when you log in to your Google account and have the option to stay logged in on your current device, from the login screen (where you enter your password)? There should be a checkbox for that.
The Password Manager will fill in the information. You still have to press the "LonIn" button.

Thanks cor-el.
That was just exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't find the entry that I needed in the cookies list, so I deleted all the exceptions for Yahoo and made the login site ask for permission to set a cookie and chose "Allow". That was a job finding the Yahoo entries in that list. Firefox needs a search function for that.
Thanks again.
