It seems as though I often get an "Attachment Appears Empty" Alert, even though the file is larger than 50K. My emails affected are gmail accounts. I only use Thunderbird for my gmail accounts. It seems consistent whenever someone tries to send me something via dropbox or google docs. I can open up the "empty" attachment in Gmail on the web however. Why doesn't it open in Thunderbird?
