I understand that .wdseml files are used for Windows search. I use Windows 10 and have unchecked the "Allow Windows search to search messages" option.

Does Thunderbird use .wdseml files for any other purpose? If not, may I delete them to save space? May I delete the .mozmsgs directories as well? Does unchecking the "Allow Windows search to search messages" option cause Thunderbird to delete the .wdseml files and .mozmsgs directories automatically if they serve no useful purpose?

Go ahead and delete these files and folders.

Thunderbird won't delete them for you, though it should stop adding to them.
