somehow my Thunderbird email site was updated to 52.2.0 without my permission and knowledge. All my saved folders containing emails I was saving have disappeared( such as Hemmings Car, personal pictures etc) My local server Shaw could not help me get folders back, how do I get them back? Thank you.

You can check to make sure your saved folders are still on the computer by clicking on the Thunderbird menu icon and select Help, then Troubleshooting Information. The Troubleshooting Information, about the 4th item down in the first section, has a link to your Profile Folder. You can click on the Open Folder button to see the location of the folder and the files it contains.

If you do not want automatic updates go into Options and turn it off. I doubt that it was a Thunderbird update that caused this. Do you use CCleaner software?

If you continue to use email as a permanent storage, a really bad idea by the way, you should consider doing backups. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data
