Google calender synchronisation was installed as directed by Matt but now there is nothing but trouble. Constantly repeating messages about the event has been altered - disregard your changes etc. and warnings that my quota (whatever that is) has been exceeded, constantly synchronising 1000 plus events, freezing.... Wish I'd never done it. How do I remove all traces of the calender?

Both the calendar, Lightning, and whatever you added to perform the sync are add-ons. Go to the add-ons tab and remove them if that is what you want.
