I am using a message filter to send and auto-reply when I receive a message TO a specific address. Unfortunately it appears that since this address is a mailing list, which is what appears in the FROM field, the auto-reply is trying to send to the mailing list rather than the original sender and is failing.

The filter itself is simple... To contains <mailing list address>, reply with template (chose the correct template from the drop-down). The error message is:

[01/16/2018 03:46:11 PM] Filter Action Failed: "Sending reply aborted" with error code=0x80004004 while attempting: Applied filter "Template Subject" to message from "Sender Name" <mailing list address> - <Subject> at 01/16/2018 03:45:57 PM replied

Thunderbird 52.4.0 (64-bit) on debian. Is there a way to specify that I want to reply to sender rather than than the list, similar to the options I have when manually responding to one of these messages? For example, the Reply-To field contains the original sender's email address, but the From field contains a combination of the sender's name and the mailing list address.

Thanks in advance.

I think you can have the reply go to the Reply-to entry by switching the preference mail.override_list_reply_to to false.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/52.4.0/releasenotes/

Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General/Config. editor, double-click a preference to toggle true to false.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working. I made the change, tried sending an email but got no auto-reply. Restarted TB and double-checked the value was still set to false, sent a couple more test emails, but still not getting the auto-reply. Rechecked the filter log and for each of my incoming emails I see the same error as above.
