When replying to an HTML message or forwarding it, the format toolbar is missing; and the original message appears as text. How do I change this behavior?

The original message shows up as HTML. When I want to reply to it or forward it, it shows up as text, and the format toolbar is missing. The format toolbar does show up when I send an original email, and an original email I am sending goes out as HTML. So, how do I get the reply and forwarding features to preserve the original HTML form of a received email when responding to it?

After posting the above, I discovered that this behavior occurs only with certain email addressees and that these addressees were imported from my Thunderbird address book on another computer. Why would that cause this behavior?

Maybe you have those contacts set to 'Prefers to receive messages formatted as' Plain text in Address Book.
