I'm using latest Thunderbird version on latest Windows 10 and I'm not receiving a sound or notification through the Windows 10 notification center when Thunderbird isn't open. All the options for alerts in Options > General are turned ON and Thunderbird is also set to automatically check for mails. Whenever I open Thunderbird it shows latest, new mail just fine and also plays the sound like it should.

I don't if it's normal but I noticed Thunderbird isn't present as application in Windows notifications & actions settings but "Mail" is there (that's the default Windows 10 mail client). Turning on notifications for the default Windows 10 mail application doesn't make a difference. Thunderbird is installed on my PC and set as default mail app in Windows Default apps settings. Also, I have set my system tray to always show all icons.

How can I receive notifications again for Thunderbird when it's not open?

If Thunderbird is not running then it cannot connect to server, so computer has no knowledge about whether there are new emails or not. The notification pop up is something Thunderbird creates.

The last few comments in this bug report discuss how to force notifications to use the Windows notification area but Thunderbird still needs to be running even if it is minimised to the tray. REad from comment 20 onwards: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1192615#c20 Please note bugzilla is not a help forum, but the information may help redirect the notifier to Windows 10.

I could've sworn Thunderbird used the Windows notification area before by default and while the program wasn't open but maybe it was just Windows mail which I had configured with a mail account, combined with Thunderbird as the default mail app.
