Replace accidentally removed login- server settings ok
Using thunderbird on iMac to access Verizon email on Email. I accidentally removed the login from password manager. Server settings are ok. When I try to get mail it asks for new password but because saved passwords in password manager is blank it fails. How do I replace the login information- it’s the whole login not just password. Help please

Should read Verizon email on AOL
You need to log into the AOL site and generate an app password, and use that instead of the regular account password in TB.

That was already done but when the app is closed and you try to go on again thunderbird goes to saved passwords in the password manager. That being blank I’m back to where I am now. The question is how to restore the total login but thanks anyway
If Saved Passwords is empty, as it would be after deleting the 3 files, then you will be asked for the password on restart, and after entering the app password and checking the box in the prompt, the app password will be stored in Saved Passwords.
Just to clarify-when you go to saved passwords you’d expect something like this Site smtp://Verizon.net Username Thunderbirdhelpdem. Password XYZ This is what thunderbird uses to sign on but because I accidentally “Removed” it, it’s blank. So my problem is how do I replace that info? .
Log into the AOL site with the account password and create an app password. If you've forgotten the account password, it has to be reset through the AOL website. TB has no capacity to reset passwords - it only applies the ones established with the mail provider. If there are no entries in Saved Passwords, you will be prompted to enter one the first time you connect to the account. Enter the app password, instead of the account password.
If you aren't seeing a prompt, there's something else wrong, possibly you have a 3rd-party app managing passwords and interfering with TB's authentication process.
Hi So I did that and after a long pause (“host contacted, sending login information “). I got “Error with account (my email address) sensing of password for user (my email address) did not succeed. Mail server pop.Verizon.net responded [SYS/TEMP] server error- Please try again later. Note a couple weeks ago a friend (knows a lot more than I) went thru AOL 2nd level support. Did the temp password changed to permanent one then had to do other 3 devices (painful). Honestly not sure if I checked that save password box though.
Also under account setup, (setup your existing email address) and after checking settings, get message “Error creating account incoming server already exists” oh prior to hitting done- I did retest & got “ the following settings were found by probing the given server” I really appreciate all the time your investing !
Check that the settings are correct: pop.verizon.net on 995, smtp.verizon.net on 465; SSL/TLS, normal password, User Name = email address.
If you forgot to check the box in the password prompt, Saved Passwords will be empty.
Hi Efhowes Those are the settings. On this round I did check the box. I’m wondering (based on the language of the error message) if it expects you to get a temp password rather than using the current one. Also note I can sign on ok via 2 iPhones, 1 iPad and via web page all with the current password. Jerry…
The only password that will work in TB is an app password. The regular account password will work on the AOL website, and might work on mobile devices, but that might change in the future.
I’m a bit confused.
So as I mentioned a couple weeks ago the 2nd layer AOL had us change to a temp password and after successfully logged on we changed to current one. All ran fine till I recently closed TB. Then I was where I am now.
So my current theory is - probably didn’t check the save password and after restart it couldn’t get back in bc I had initially screwed up by removing passwords. Not sure what to do now but think I need to go back to getting temp password- get back in then change password to new current one (saving it); then the others 3 devices will have to go thru a similar routine. Ugh What do u think?
I don't know what you mean by 'temp password'. The only thing that will work is an app password, mentioned in my first reply.
When u go to AOL to reset your password they give you a temporary password. The idea is after you get signed on you create your own password
Hi SFHOWES A little under the weather. Will do as you have suggested next week. I believe that is the solution. Thanks for all your help!
