I had the same problem and was able to restore sanity by setting "browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground" to TRUE.

To set that, go to Edit > Preferences, the General section, (scroll to bottom) then press "Config Editor...", then press "Show All", then search for part of the property name.

Thanks firefox1574 (and sfhowes), altho I cannot confirm. Several other bothersome glitches & shortcomings recently drove me back to gmail's web access for now (and uninstalled Thunderbird)... presently on the lookout for an email client I can live with.
