I have tried using ports 465 and 2525 but without sucess, and apparently it is not possible to set up a split tunnel for Thunderbird. Do you know of any way I can get around this problem?

Unfortunately, the most frequently suggested 'solution' to your problem that I've seen here is to shut down the VPN. But I respect that's not your plan. When trying 465, did you also try both STARTTLS and SSL/TLS? Another possibility might be to contact the VPN provider to see if you can be whitelisted.
