I dislike the "choose helper application" dialogue for "Open with" in the download manager.

To my irritation, I've found that the original download manager option when clicking "Browse" under "Open with" for Firefox has changed in version 3.6.3 to a popup "choose helper application" dialogue. Is there any way I can get the old download manager back with the simple chooser that appears next to the "Open with" radio button? I don't mean to complain, but I hate hate HATE that unnecessary popup. I mean that I'd like this:

instead of this:

Hello.

My Firefox (3.6.3) still displays the old dropdown... You may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

Morbus, the issue is not caused by addons. It is a "feature" added to Firefox 3.6.3- I'm not sure how you got yours to do what it did. I'm guessing there is a way to implement a change in about:config.

I doubt that's the case, but I can't be sure. Can you provide a screenshot (of the whole screen, please) of the choose helper application, in your Firefox?

more options

Morbus, it is exactly as it appears in the second link provided.

I understand that, but please provide a screenshot of the whole page.

You may want to upload the screenshot into http://imageshack.us/ or a similar site, to avoid the 200KB limit here.

I would rather not provide a screenshot of my entire desktop for an issue that concerns a single dialogue box. However, I have repaired it on my own with a little custom file manipulation.

I don't want your entire desktop, just the entire Firefox window.

I'm sorry for not being clearer.

I have a similar issue - which file was it?

I have the same problem. I like the older implementation of the drop down list.

Just wanted to add that I tried it in safe mode after disabling everything (all add-ons, settings etc). Same thing happens.

Firefox does not remember the application that was used last time at all. The drop down list does not appear at all.
