Since I updated Firefox to the newest version today, I can't get on any sites at all. I just get the "500 Internal Server Error" message each time. How can I fix this error?

I've already tried closing and re-opening Firefox, and restarting my computer, but I still just get the error message when I try to get on any sites. I know it's not a problem with my internet since Internet Explorer is working fine. I would just uninstall and re-install Firefox, but then I would lose all my bookmarks, passwords, etc., which is the main reason why I'm trying so hard to fix it without uninstalling altogether.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

  • "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
  • "Remove the Cookies" from sites causing problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

You can also check the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select "No Proxy"

See "Firefox connection settings":

Sorry, I've already done all that and it hasn't changed anything. Any other suggestions?

Which security software (firewall) do you have?

Did you check there?

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Yes, I checked there. I have McAfee, and I followed the directions on the troublehooting page (removing Firefox and putting it back on the list of allowed programs), but still nothing changed with the error messages.

This thread suggests that it is a problem with McAfee: /questions/804082

So you can try to contact McAfee to ask what to do about this.
