When I click on the bookmark tab at the top of the page, the bookmark column appears and takes up 1/2 the page, and I want to make it narrower.
Again. When I move the cursor over the bookmark tab at the top of the page, a list of my bookmarks appears below. However, the list is very wide and takes up 1/2 of the page--most of it white space--and I would like to make the column list of bookmarks more narrow. The size of the fonts does not change--just the amount of white space--which is excessive.
Thanks.

That is probably because you have one or more bookmarks with a long title.
The width of a column in the Bookmarks menu list is in current Firefox versions automatically adjusted to fit the bookmark with the longest name.
You can check the names of the bookmarks and make the longer ones shorter.
Firefox 5 seems to calculate bookmarks dropdowns to the character width; Firefox 4 doesn't. revert to Firefox 4 for relief.
Incredibly annoying, what purpose is there in implementing this? I hope future versions revert back to a narrow bookmarks menu dropdown.
That is caused by a Bug in Mac versions of Firefox 5, which was fixed for Firefox 6.
