I'm not familiar with Ubuntu, so this article might help: http://blog.sudobits.com/2011/06/22/firefox-5-for-ubuntu-11-0410-10/

Also, check the minimum system requirements to run Firefox 5.0: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/system-requirements.html

If you are using the version of Firefox that comes with Ubuntu or a version that you installed from their program repository, the "Check for Updates" feature is overridden by Ubuntu's updater.

If you install a version of Firefox obtained directly from Mozilla, that feature would be enabled and the updates would be coming from Mozilla, not from Ubuntu.

BTW, I don't have Firefox 5 offered as an update by Ubuntu 10.4 on my ASUS netbook either.
