Firefox is constantly closing itself and giving me a message saying it apologized for the inconvenience and asking me to send Mozilla a report.
This has gotten to be just ignorant now Firefox. Of course it is Sunday and I can't even talk to anyone there until tomorrow!! Firefox has been crashing over and over again on me. Sometimes before it even opens it goes to a crash error report saying "Firefox has needed to close. Please send crash report to Mozilla.". This happens so much that last night I changed back to Explorer as my browser and moved all of my bookmarks there. This is a new issue and I have not made any recent changes to my computer. I am on a Dell XPS 8300 and running Windows 7 Home Premium. Nothing new has been installed at all and no changes made, this just started last night and has become so frequent that Firefox is now an unusable browser. It does not have a pattern that I can see though and just randomly crashes itself. Sometimes it crashes from the start page, sometimes when you go to a website and almost every time I have tried to log into and check my Email.

See Firefox crashes and Firefox crashes when you open it. Posting your crash report IDs as specified in the first article may give us a clue.
You might want to try starting in Firefox Safe Mode. Do no check anything when entering Safe Mode. Safe Mode will disable your extensions and a few other Firefox features. If you do not have the problem in Safe Mode, then the problem is most likely caused by an extension or plugin.

That is all incorrect.
Under the "rapid release" plan adopted earlier this year, there will be very few,if any, releases in the future with "sub-numbers" (i.e., 5.1, 6.1, etc.). Firefox 5.0 was a security and stability release for Firefox 4.0.1 and Firefox 6.0 will be a security and stability release for Firefox 5.0.1. The "0.1" versions were to fix critical issues that could not wait for the next release.
I have installed and used every release and most beta versions of Firefox for years and have yet to encounter a major problem; I do not install alpha versions.
As for VLC media player, there is an option, both at install and on the VLC interface to choose the file type associations; do some reading on the videolan.org site and forums and learn to use it.
And please stop spreading your "venom" in numerous posts. Only post replies that will address the original poster's question and offer a real, possible solution.

fixitman2001, please stop spreading such misinformation.
As for the two years wait well that would not have worked even before this new rapid release as one would be one if not likely two major versions behind and possibly using a version not supported by the minor security/stability updates anymore.
You can expect more Firefox versions during the next view months:
I switched back to FF 5 because 6 keeps crashing - even when I have left the room! It crashes probably a dozen times during a 3 hour computer session, even if I am not using it but it is open. It is quite bizarre and I have never experienced this before. FF 6 is also very slow and hangs and just seems to have substantial problems. I will wait a while longer before upgrading to 6 to see if I see anyone reporting that this obvious problem has been fixed.
Hanging and crashing is even worse with 6.0.1.
