During normal usage Firefox will suddenly stop loading all pages in all tabs/windows. Every currently loading page remains blank, with the usual 'Connecting to ____' message. Any new tabs or windows opened, or any new page requests, get stuck in the same loop. The program itself does not hang and, other than failing to load pages, performs normally. No change in behaviour with all add-ons disabled. Seems to happen with any website, but seems to happen more often on pages with any elements that take excessively long to load. Only current solution is to close program and restart.

This is not a router/connectivity issue, IE and other programs can connect fine while the issue is occurring. Full system virus scan came up empty (Sophos/Ad-Aware/WinDefender). I believe I first starting having the problem with FF6, feels like it has become more frequent with FF7.

I may have found a solution to this problem here (well, at least Firefox has been working again for the last few hours, not sure if it will prove to be a long term solution or not).

As it says in the linked article, type about:config into the address bar, find network.http.max-connections and change its value from 256 to 48.

I have absolutely no idea why this works but it seems to. According to my resource monitor Firefox still seems to be using a ridiculous amount of memory and disk, and my cpu fan is still going crazy, but at least websites are loading again!

Does this fix the problem for anyone else?

Tried changing the value to 48 but it made no difference: it hangs consistently, no matter what site I am trying to load. I ditto the postings of both fccorp and archeocyathan (both 4 days ago)--have been through everything suggested; nothing helps. Finally threw out v7.0.1 and re-loaded v3.6.12 from another computer. Mozilla should at the very least make a previous version available on their web site until they fix this--can't use Firefox 7 the way it is. Attached a screen shot that shows a typical "waiting" message in the bottom left corner when the hang starts.

I was on the beta channel(v7) few months back and saw this problem. Reverting it back to release channel(v6.x) fixed the issue. Didn't have the time to notify the team about it also at that time I thought since it is beta one is suppose to expect problems. But now they have released v7 in the release channel and looks like the problem is still there.

My Solution:

All those who don have the time to help in debug revert back to the v6.x

And those of you who have the time or interested in sorting this problem carry on.

Message to firefox: If it takes longer to fix this issue My advice will be to revert the release channel back to v6.x ASAP. People are very annoyed by this and will switch to chrome or some other browser pretty fast.

It is not a recommended course of action to revert back to Firefox 6. Firefox 3.6.23 is still supported and secure you could revert back to that.

You will note there is a workaround posted above about changing a preference, that may be an easy workaround that solves your problem. That is also detailed in a newly revised KB article:

Note also there is another cause of hangs in firefox, relating to the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks for that see

Note also a firefox developer is even asking users seeing this problem to post information as attachments in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=692260

This blog post fixed it for me! http://blog.bonardo.net/2011/09/30/is-your-firefor-freezing-at-regular-intervals

The max connections fix did nothing for me.

I have a really large bookmark collection that is over 3mb in size. I believe that this was choking the "places" portion of Firefox. I think the fix essentially cleans up your bookmark database to be more easily read by Firefox.

Either way, I followed the directions on that blog and now Firefox is super FAST and freeze free now. Its only been a few hours, but it seems like it is really fixed. Page loads are faster, switching between tabs is faster, scrolling up and down pages is more responsive, and making new bookmarks is much quicker as well.

Thank you for the help!

I've changed network.http.max-connections to 48 @ FF7.0.1 and tested it! This really solves the problem ! I'm back to Firefox 7 without problems! I'm also using "memory fox" add which reduces a lot memory leak! Nice tip!!

Hi,

I have this problem also and until know I cursed my shitty internet connection and my shitty router until I realised is Firefox related.

I am a big fan of firefox using it from the beginning but this caused me to make some deeper research on Chrome and even Opera.

Please fix asap :) I have the issue from v 6 if I remember correctly.

I've attached a file which could help you (snapshot during the ff hang). I opened lots of tabs, mostly blogs.

Thanks, Ciprian

Hi cipriancaba,
You said

I have this problem also and until know I cursed my shitty internet connection and my shitty router until I realised is Firefox related.

Well if you read the bug, the developer was posting about higher up in this thread, there is a possibility some of these problems may be router related.

The good news is that changing the connections settings as mentioned in one of my posts above may well be a suitable workaround for your problem. Those studying the bug are in fact asking for technically minded posters to supply details of the problems, and run tests to recreate the problem.

more options

Well, I can 100% recreate the problem.. I have Windows 7 64 bits, I have the problem at my office and at home.

If I leave the max-connections at 256, the problem is re-appearing, if I set to 48, the problem is gone.

The easiest way to recreate is to open lots of tabs (open your rss reader and just keep opening tabs from engadget, gizmodo, techrunch, so on..). If the problem doesn't happen, close the browser and restart it. After restarting, go to hsitrory and restore previous tabs. In all my tests, the problem is there and the dll's above were generated by ProcessExplorer and I saw that a firefox developer was asking these details, that's why I posted them.

Btw, adding the option to upload a txt file would make some sense on these forums.

Cheers, Ciprian

Update:
The solution is also given in KB article Websites show a spinning wheel and never finish loading_lower-the-max-number-of-http-connections
and that is likely to be kept up-to-date as to the best solutions.

Developers are working to track down this problem, but any fix is more likely to be in firefox 9 now rather than firefox 8. A possible problem is identified with Windows OS and fixes are being tested. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=692260#c88

Thank you both for your recommendations, I've done them but the problem is still there.

I've noticed that if I do a clean install with a clean new profile, everything works. BUT if I copy/paste the contents of my previous profile, problems begin.

A QUESTION: Has disabling an add-on the same effect as uninstalling it?

I've disable almost the addons trying to find the one that could be originating the problem, but the problem is still there.

I hope Mozilla guys find a fix soon.

Thanks again.
