Hello, I am trying to open up Firefox on my Mac (SnowLeopard - 10.6.8) but it will not open. When I first click on it, it just freezes immediately. So, then I go to FORCE QUIT and on force quit it just says that firefox is not responding. Obviously, all other web browsers are working because I am online right now. So, only Firefox isn't working - but it was working fine before.

The only suggestions I've read online, to fix crashes, is to restart firefox in safe mode. The problem with the safe-mode suggestion is I CAN NOT EVEN START firefox up at all - firefox freezes from the first moment it opens. Since it freezes, I can't even click on firefox's menu option or tools option, nothing... to run it in safe-mode. So safe mode suggestion is not an option. The firefox web-browser window totally freezes from the moment I first click on the Icon, and the spin-wheel just spins over and over again.

Based on all of that, I deleted the firefox version I had, which was version 8... and then reinstalled the new version 9. But, even after I installed version 9, it still does not work. I have also done several anti-virus scans... three different virus scans, and each scan says I have no virus at all! So, what is going on?? Any advice and what can I do?

Thanks for your help.

After running into this problem of firefox crashing after downlaoding a file and runnign virus scan, I've noticed that when i reopen firefox i'm fine until I open the download manager (ctrl-j) to which it shows nothing in the history and promptly crashes again.

For me I've only had this problem since upgrading to firefox 9.0.1

It looks like you installed version 9, but have you tried installing 9.0.1? Take a look at this article that discusses issues with Firefox. There was an issue with 9.0 that has been fixed in 9.0.1.

Hopefully this helps!

Matt,

Thanks for your reply. I went and did as you recommended, and I downloaded the new firefox version 9.0.1 and tried it.

Unfortunately, the problem stills persist exactly the same as before - even with this new version 9.0.1. For clarification purposes, I should add though that the problem did not start with version 9... the problem started with version 8. Once the crashing problems began with version 8... a version which I have had for months and it had worked fine until it crashed... that is when I downloaded version 9 - and only after version 8 gave me problems. So the root of my problem has not been version 9. Instead, the problem persists in all versions of Firefox, so much so that this new version 9.0.1 is also still having the same problem I described in the previous post.

Of course, like I said before... my computer is able to go online with Safari and even with Google chrome. Only the Firefox web-browser... which is my preferred browser... is the only that has started giving me problems and I don't know why. Arghh! I prefer firefox over Google Chrome.. I prefer it over Safari... so I would like to be able to go back and use it... but it won't even let me open it. I have never had this problem before... so any help would be appreciated. But even version 9.0.1 is not opening. Any other suggestions? And yes, I ran a virus scan 3 times and everything came up clean. Thanks.

Try to delete the file downloads.sqlite in the Firefox Profile Folder
