Shockwave Flash 12.0.0.77 keeps crashing. It was only installed on 14 March 2014 and I am told it is up to date. I am running Firefox 28.0 on Windows 7 home premium.

The message I get is Warning: Unresponsive Plugin Shockwave Flash maybe busy, or it may have stopped responding, <snip>

I used to get this with an older version of Shockwave Flash and an older verison of Firefox, but in the last few days it has started to happen again (since I updated Firefox to the latest version).

You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:

  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

I've had Chrome and didn't like it. In Windows 7 I went to the control panel then Programs and Features/ then Adobe Flash Player Active x and Adobe Flash Player Plugin/ deleted each one. Went to Adobe and installed the Flash Player 14 and the active X was automatically installed with the player. I'm all set and NO problems.

Problem:

I had the message "Shockwave flash may be busy" message all the time on mozilla firefox (running Windows 7 on many of my laptops) recently.

I tried all kinds of other solutions but here is what finally fixed it.

Solution:

I pulled up any random youtube.com video and right clicked on the video itself once the video started playing. Then I selected "Settings" from the list of options.

https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/images/2014-08-06-10-58-37-5ebb39.png

Next a small box with the title "Adobe Flash Player Settings" showed up with the Display tab selected by default. From there I saw that "Enable hardware acceleration" checkbox was checked and so I unchecked that box and then hit the "Close" button.

I closed all my mozilla firefox browsers and then opened mozilla new and went to a page that used to crash and it no longer crashed.

Still a problem after installing FF 32.0. Seems to be site-specific, since Shockwave actually works more than it doesn't.

I just wanted to say, that this has been a problem for years! for as long as i have been using Firefox, in every windows, ie. xp, vista, 7, 8. I have tried everything over the years, as well as other people. i have been reading the blogs, and the only thing i've read is the same old story. reset, reinstall, turn this off, turn this on. and none of it works! it's time someone addressed this to find out what is wrong. is it Firefox? is it shockwave flash? it gets annoying when your trying to watch a show on the computer, and it keeps crashing. i really feel as though Mozilla just doesn't care and doesn't want to deal with this. i'm about to switch to some other browser.

I've upgraded to 32.0.3, but continue to run with Shockwave Flash in "Ask to activate" mode. Seems to hurt a lot of advertising, which isn't a bad thing. Haven't seen any crashes lately, even when I selectively activate Flash.

the thing is, all the advice these Mozilla people give, will only work for a short period of time. but then, you can also fix it for a short period of time by refreshing the page. Shockwave goes down once a day when i'm trying to watch a show on the net. like i said, this has been going on for years, and no one has done anything to fix it yet. you can go back 5 years and see the same advice given in posts. and yet also see comments stating it only worked for a day or so. they only give short work arounds, and never fix the problem.

Just FYI, Flash is developed by Adobe, not Mozilla. We can't fix it, because if we could we would. We are working on other options (Building our own alternative for example) but they aren't easy and take time). Until then, we can only give workarounds. If you want to complain, please complain to Adobe.

Will we ever come to find out that Microsoft has a pact with Adobe to blunt the appeal of Mozilla Fire Fox with Flash crashes?

I keep an unmodified installation of IE11 around for several reasons, one of which is to access Web content that Firefox can't. This install also deletes all cookies, history, etc., on closing, so it should be a pristine IE11 every time it opens.

I'm sympathetic to Mozilla's position, but the fact remains (as I recall -- I'll work to verify that) that Firefox crashes sometimes when Flash runs, but not when running my IE11 (and other browsers as well, perhaps), when rendering the same website and content.

For everyone's information, Adobe has a similar forum and long thread on the same issue at https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1283944. In that thread they refer to a bug-reporting site at https://bugbase.adobe.com/, where (after registering, etc.) one can post crash information for Adobe to investigate.

Whether the "fault" lies with Flash or Firefox, I can't say. I would hope that continued reporting of crashes to both sites will help determine which finger to point, and will offer any help I can, although my skills and resources aren't what they used to be.
