We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. On the keyboard, press [Windows] The image "Windows key" does not exist. + [R]. This should bring up a Run window that contains a text field.
  2. In that text field, type %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
  3. From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
  4. Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
  5. Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  6. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

Hi rdhillon, your five crash reports all indicate "shutdown hang" which is odd because it occurs when you're starting up Firefox. ??

If you go into the Windows 7 Task Manager, can you confirm that firefox.exe isn't actually running hidden before trying to start in Safe Mode?

Ctrl+Shift+Esc will launch the Task Manager

The Applications tab generally shows the visible programs that have windows, so Firefox probably isn't there but please check.

The Processes tab shows all running programs whether they have a window or not. If you sort by name, it might be easier to check for firefox.exe among the others. You can right-click > End Process on any you find.

To start Firefox in Safe Mode when it's not running, hold down the Shift key when double-clicking the shortcut/icon.

Any better luck?

I checked the task manager and nothing is running in the back round. I held the shift key and pressed open in safe mode but I don't now if it is running in safe mode everything looks normal, what should I do next

That's good news, but it's hard to suggest next steps because we don't have a clear idea of what was going wrong in normal mode.

(1) Safe Mode disables Firefox's use of hardware acceleration, which works around incompatibilities with graphics card/chipset driver software. You can turn that off so when you start up again normally it will be disabled.

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

(2) Safe Mode disables your extensions, so you could consider whether there are any that you do not need or do not recognize and remove those.

Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, consider removal. I don't know whether you can Disable extensions in Safe Mode so they don't run in normal mode but if you can, you can try that on anything you won't need to use for the next 24 hours.

ok, it looks like now im in safe mode. is there anything I can do while in this mode to resolve the issue of crashing when in normal mode

You appear to have two extensions: Download YouTube Videos as MP4 and Adblock Plus

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)
