38.0 I've lost Forward, Reply/ReplyAll is a mess, and customise tool bar doesn't help. Help
So the autoinstall of 38.0 has left the problems above. Customise either doesn't have what I want or wont drag onto the toolbar. At worst can I get back to v37? I don't understand the merits of v38 which means, I think, that I don't need them!? Quite separately from the above I have a problem with my memory overfilling for temporary periods even when I'm not requiring any activity. I've installed more memory, which aleviated the problem briefly but suddenly, a few weeks ago, it's back. I've done virus scans to no avail. When this happens it's always Mozilla and Thunderbird that top the activity list and I'm tempted to re-install them. I'll do a back-up first but would prefer not to rely on that as I've never tried recovering from a back-up. Specifically do I need to take any action to protect/preserve my email history? And addrbk? Thank you in anticipation of any help given.

I was using version 38.0.1 and did not experience any issues you describe, but there may have other personalised preferences etc accumulated over time that differentiate between your profile and mine. Yes, the answer may have sounded text book, but it is usually the quickest method to get things corrected.
I'm now using the latest version 38.1.0 and currently not experiencing any issues.

When you select to read an email in the Message Pane, you should see the header section above the actual email content. Are you saying that you can only see 'Archive', 'Junk', 'Delete' and 'more', but 'Reply', 'Forward' and when appropriate 'Reply-all' do not display? If yes: In the header section, right click just below 'Delete' button and select 'customise' Select: 'Restore default set' and click on 'Done'.
Toadhall, your answer WAS helpfull and well informed but, i suspect, not up to speed on what v38 is doing to me!. I hadn't tried 'restore default set' before and that has retrieved the 'Forward' button but at the cost of 'ReplyAll' (and I'm not allowed to drag that from the Customise screen). Pre v38 I had both 'Reply' and a 'Reply All' buttons. if I was on a mail where I was the only recipient then @Reply all' was superfluous but that didn't matter. It seems as though someone is trying to eliminate 'Reply all' when one is the only recipient AND HAS GOT IT VERY WRONG. I use 'Forward' and 'REPLY All' a lot and this is a disaster. If no solution in days I'll have to migrate elsewhere
'ReplyAll' button will only appear when you select an email that was originally sent to several people including you. If email was only sent to you then there will be no 'ReplyAll' because it is not required when replying to one person.
So, please select an email which includes you as one of several people receiving the email and then you should see the ReplyAll button.
But I don't! I'm highlighting a mail sent to several, text below, with toolbar between and I only have Reply, not Reply All. I recovered 'Forward' by following your first advice to 'Restore Default Set'. Forward wasn't on the Customise menu and other things that were there wouldn't drag onto the toolbar.
However, as of a few moments ago I HAVE managed to drag RA from Customise so, fingers crossed, I now have what I need (ie R,RA, and F). It's also the case that RA DOESN'T disappear when I'm on a message where I'm the only recipient. That's fine by me as it's what I'm used to pre v38.
Thanks very much for helping me 'get there'. I think your answers were 'textbook' but you've been underestimating the difficulties that came with v38!
I'm just wondering, given that 'things' are working differently today to yesterday, whether there's been a v38 'correction'?
