Hi CherylMO, Are you on Mac or Windows? Do you have an IMAP or POP account?

I'm going to assume you are on Windows with a IMAP account.

Try this: Click on Tools->Account Settings, and In "Server Settings" (above the "Copies & Folders" category), there is a sub-section in the middle of the window called "Server Settings," (yes, kind of redundant, isn't it?) and under "Check for new messages at startup" and "Check for new messages every X minutes" there is an option titled "When I delete a message". Here you can specify whether it gets moved to a folder (and which folder on the server, marked as deleted, or erased immediately. Check to see what you have configured here.

If your configuration above appears to be correct, then look at the suggestions at http://kb.mozillazine.org/IMAP_Trash_folder

I tried again the newest version of Thunderbird and followed the instructions above and the deleted messages were set to go in the trash bin. I didn't have to change anything. I tested it and AGAIN the message deleted was not in the trash. Not only that this version constantly crashes. I am going back to 24.0 as it is the only stable version for me. Very disappointed in Thunderbird.
