It seems every time I have MSN updates installed on my computer, it gets slower. Is this my imagination, or is it actuality? If so, how can I resolve the problem? On the one hand it would seem a good idea to have the updates, but if it is at the cost of my computer running slower, is it? Hopefully someone can help. Thank you.

This is a Firefox forum, not a windows support forum. However, windows updates typically will improve performance, not decrease it. Maybe look into other issues such as malware or graphics driver updates to investigate performance problems.

Tyler,

Thank you for your reply. I have already reviewed your suggestions, to no avail though. Just thought my computer slowness was maybe caused by all those updates. Thanks again though for your reply, Tyler

There are people who recommend rebuilding a system every couple of years to improve its performance because every change every day gradually slows it down...

I think the two fastest ways to speed up a computer are:

(1) If you have less than 4GB of RAM memory, upgrade to 4GB minimum; and

(2) Change from a spinning hard drive to a solid state drive (SSD) (software like Macrium Reflect can seamlessly transfer your hard drive contents to the SSD, and then you can use your spinning hard drive in an external USB3 enclosure for backups).

This is a helpful forum for advice on Windows, and there are several others out there: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/

Hi Jscher,

Thank you for your reply. Frankly, your second comment was somewhat confusing for a computer novice like me. But, my system has 4.0 GB's installed, but 3.6 GB's usable? Why is the usable smaller? My processor is AMD E-300 APU and has H.D. graphics 1.3 HZ if that is of any help? Also, my "C" hard drive has 376 GB's free space of 449 GB's total, and my "D" drive has 2.07 GB's free space of 16.56 GB's total space. Does my hard drive specs show any problems to you, Jscher? I do appreciate your help and understanding, Jscher. Thank you.

please don't do a paragraph or line indent - it forces a scrollbar to appear and makes the posting hard top read

Hmm, I don't know. Perhaps part of it is reserved by Windows?

That's fine as far as capacity goes. The advantage of an SSD is very fast read speed, programs and files load much more quickly.

On a 64 bit system it would be better to have at least 8 GB installed because memory is allocated in 64 bit (8 bytes) chunks as compared to 32 bit (4 bytes) on a 32 bit Windows version, so is used up more quickly. Windows always needs to reserve (map) memory for the display and for other programs that run at kernel level, so the full 4 GB isn't available.

Jscher,

Thank you for your reply. Not sure how do go about that change frankly. But, thanks once again.

cor-el,

Thank you for your reply. How do I go about changing from 4 GB to 8 GB's on my system? Also, I've noticed my replies are not coming out correctly--please don't do a paragraph or line indent - it forces a scrollbar to appear and makes the posting hard top read. My replies are shown as such. How do I go about changing my reply format so it shows properly? Thank you.

Hi sciencemagic, do not start new lines in your reply with spaces. The forum converts those lines to a preformatted block without line breaks.

jscher, thank you for your reply, I now know why that was happening. To respond to cor-el's comment about going to a 8 GB increase from my 4 GB. How can I go about that? Can I install some kind of performance increase from H.P. for my current system? Thank you.
