Hello,

We are considering using a dictionary created from the Mozilla English (US) dictionary as the default spell check dictionary in the Learning Management System used here at the University of New Mexico (a public institution of higher education). The LMS is Blackboard Learn, and the Mozilla dictionary appears to be better than the default one supplied with that product.

My understanding from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/ is that is our use of this dictionary is covered under the 'Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike License v3.0 or any later version' (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/). We will label the dictionary within the interface as “US English (Mozilla)” (see attached screen shot) . Users are able to see this if they click the option to select a dictionary when editing content within the Blackboard Learn software. Will this be sufficient attribution, or would we need to do anything in addition to this?

Thank you very much for your assistance, Trina University of New Mexico

Hi taltman.

I am not a lawyer, but each dictionary listed there might have a difference license (the Creative Commons license applies only where otherwise noted, mainly for the addons.mozilla.org itself, not the add-ons). The best what you can do is to open the concrete dictionary page, you want to use (e.g. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/united-states-english-spellche/), and try to get in touch with the dictionary author.
